Duke Holds First Football Summit
DURHAM, N.C. - Over 200 former football players returned to campus this weekend for
the first Duke Football Summit. Following a reception at the Yoh Football Center on
Friday evening, the group met for over six hours at the Washington Duke Inn on
Saturday, listening to several presentations by Duke staff members including
president Richard Brodhead, director of athletics Joe Alleva and head coach Ted
Roof.
The event concluded on Saturday night with the annual team banquet, where over 500
people were in attendance.
"I believe we entered unchartered territory in the world of college athletics this
weekend," Alleva said. "I have never heard of a school hosting a group of former
players this large in any sport for the purpose of discussing details about the
program. Hearing the feedback and thoughts from the former players regarding Duke
football tells me this was an excellent idea and that there is a great deal of
alumni support for the program.
"Both Coach Roof and I were very impressed with not only the number of former
players that participated, but also the direction that the discussions went," Alleva
continued. "Our former players have an invested interest in the success of the
program, and we are appreciative to those who came back to campus this weekend to
educate themselves, ask questions and offer their beliefs and views."
Seven decades of Duke Football were represented including 1945 All-America guard
Ernie "Bear" Knotts, 1955 All-America halfback Bob Pascal, 1963 All-America halfback
and ACC Player of the Year Jay Wilkinson, 1974 All-America linebacker and two-time
Duke MVP Keith Stoneback, 1989 consensus first team All-America wide receiver and
ACC Player of the Year Clarkston Hines, 1992 NFL Supplemental Draft number one
overall selection quarterback Dave Brown and 2001 first team All-ACC and two-time
Duke MVP tight end Mike Hart. Also present was Spike Yoh, former chairman of Duke's
Board of Trustees, and his wife, Mary Milus Yoh.
Thirteen former All-America choices, 24 captains and 17 team MVP selections attended
the function while four of Duke's ACC-leading 10 Player of the Year picks --
Wilkinson, wide receiver Chris Castor (1982), quarterback Anthony Dilweg (1988) and
Hines -- were present.
