Big Green Endowment Program Reaches $5 million
HUNTINGTON - The Big Green Scholarship Foundation endowment program has surpassed the major milestone of $5 million.
RJ Gimbl, executive director of the Big Green, made the announcement at last week’s foundation trustees meeting, reporting that the endowment fund now stands at $5,135,996.
“This is an outstanding achievement,” said Gimbl. “There is no better way to have your name, or that of a loved one, permanently associated with Marshall University athletics. Under the direction and guidance of Mary Lue Light, our endowment fund continues to strengthen its support for our student athletes.”
Light, coordinator of the endowment fund for the Big Green, said “We have new and increased endowment pledges totaling over $200,000 this year. These contributions will help us to meet our annual endowment objectives.”
Director of Athletics Bob Marcum thanked all the endowment contributors. “It just shows the generosity of those who love Marshall who want to use this program to provide significant support to our athletic endeavors.”
Marcum also commended the Big Green endowment committee composed of Light, David Robinson and Jim Bailes for their management which has enhanced the program.
The Big Green endowments are now on the brink of another milestone with a projection that over $200,000 will be available to provide scholarships to Thundering Herd student-athletes for the 2007-08 school year, compared to the $167,246 that was transferred for this year’s scholarships.
The endowment fund is managed by a local financial institution whose consultants have helped the Big Green Scholarship Foundation select nationally recognized money managers. Their individual mandates are based on a conservative endowment policy established and maintained by the board of the Big Green Scholarship Foundation.
In less than three years, the endowment fund has increased by 36 percent, from $3.8 million to the current figure. Since July 1 of 2006, when the fund totaled $4.4 million, the jump has been 16 percent.
Just 10 years ago, the endowment fund included just 44 endowments totaling $632,899. Now there are over 100 endowments as the fund grows toward the $6 million figure.
