Four Herd Players Named to 2006 Coaches All-Conference Football Team
IRVING, Texas – The Marshall Thundering Herd placed 10 players on the 2006 Conference USA Coaches All-Conference teams Tuesday, as selected by the league’s 12 head football coaches.
Junior running back Ahmad Bradshaw (Bluefield, Va./Graham), junior center Doug Legursky (Beckley, W.Va./Woodrow Wilson), sophomore defensive end Albert McClellan (Lakeland, Fla./Kathleen) and senior defensive back Curtis Keyes (Mt. Olive, Miss./Mize) all earned first team honors.
Sophomore punt returner Emmanuel Spann (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) was named to the third team, while freshman tight end Cody Slate (Chipley, Fla./Hargrave), senior linebacker Matt Couch (Okeana, Ohio/Ross Senior) and sophomore linebacker Josh Johnson (Milledgeville, Ga./Georgia Military) received honorable mention consideration.
Slate and redshirt freshman defensive back Zearrick Matthews (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood) were named to the C-USA Football Coaches All-Freshman team.
Each school was represented with at least four selections, with C-USA champion Houston producing a league-high 12 total selections, followed by Tulsa with 11 and East Division champion Southern Miss with 10 players on the squad. UTEP led the way with five first team selections, followed by Houston, Southern Miss, Tulsa and Marshall which all had four first team honorees.
Bradshaw leads C-USA and ranks sixth in the nation in rushing with 126.9 yards per game. He scored 19 rushing touchdowns this season (third-most in Marshall History) and had 17 catches for 129 yards and two additional touchdowns. The C-USA Offensive Player of the Year candidate leads C-USA in scoring and ranks second in the nation with 10.5 points per game (21 touchdowns).
Legursky is a two-year starter and Rimington Trophy candidate at center that anchors the Marshall offensive line. He has not missed a game in his collegiate career and has helped paved the way for Marshall's explosive running attack this season.
McClellan leads C-USA in sacks with 11.5, in tackles for loss with 19 and ranks second in forced fumbles with four. The sophomore standout has been credited with 77 total tackles and is a candidate for conference defensive player of the year.
Keyes led the Thundering Herd and ranked fourth in the conference in tackles with 104 total stops, 55 of which were solo tackles. Keyes also tied for the team lead in interceptions with two, recorded four tackles for loss and blocked a kick in his senior season.
Spann ranked second in punt returns in the conference this season with 12 for 144 yards to average 12 yards per return and earn third-team recognition. The sophomore standout also returned kicks and was Marshall's top pass catcher at wide receiver in 2006.
Slate, a true freshman, led all Conference USA tight ends in receiving with 43 catches for 684 yards and six touchdowns. He was also the top pass catching freshman in the conference regardless of position in 2006 and ranked eighth overall in receiving yards per game in C-USA with 57.
Matthews finished seventh on the team with 43 tackles and tied for third with six pass break-ups. He recorded his first career interception on a 44-yard touchdown return against Tulane.
Conference USA will announce the coaches’ selections for Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Players of the Year, as well as the Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
