Sherels Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week
The Big Ten has announced today that Gopher junior linebacker Mike
Sherels has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his
performance last Saturday against Penn State.
Sherels collected a career-best 15 tackles and three tackles-for-loss
while adding a pass breakup in a 28-27 overtime loss against Penn
State. The Rochester, Minn., native registered nine solo stops in the
game for the third double-digit tackle performance of his career. He
set his previous career high with 12 tackles just one week earlier
against Michigan. Sherels leads the Gophers and is tied for third in
the Big Ten with 8.7 tackles per game. He earns the first weekly
accolade of his career.
Ohio State senior quarterback Troy Smith and Wisconsin freshman running
back P.J. Hill were named Big Ten Co-Offensive Players of the Week,
while Indiana sophomore return man Marcus Thigpen was named the Big Ten
Special Teams Player of the Week.
