CROOM TAKES LONG LOOK AT RUNNERS IN FINAL SCRIMMAGE

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State head football coach Sylvester Croom took a long look at his reserve halfbacks during the Bulldogs' final camp scrimmage Saturday, trying to discern who would work behind starter Brandon Thornton when the team opens the season a week from Thursday.

"We've still got a lot of work to do, but I wanted to take a look at the running game today," Croom said. "Some guys didn't get a good look last week and we wanted to see them extensively today. A couple of guys piqued our interest."

State's offense scored four touchdowns during the 90-minute controlled scrimmage, two through the air and two on the ground. Michael Henig threw both TD passes, one each to Keon Humphries and Eric Butler. Freshman halfback Anthony Dixon and reserve quarterback Tray Rutland tallied the rushing scores.

A mix of units was paired against one another throughout the scrimmage, starting drives at various locations on the field. Only on two occasions were the first units on the field at the same time, each coming away with a victory. On their first set, the defense held the offense to 8 yards and forced a punt. On the second, the offense went 65 yards on seven plays, capped by Butler's 14-yard scoring catch.

But there was no question that the coaching staff wanted to concentrate heavily on the running game. The State offense ran the football 72 times in 102 total snaps. Dixon led the parade of ground gainers, rushing 31 times for 145 yards, but walk-on Justin Williams was equally impressive, gaining 85 yards on 12 carries.
