BULLDOGS ENTER MONDAY
MODE WITH SCRIMMAGE
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's 2006 football season doesn't begin
until next week, but with classes in session, head coach Sylvester Croom
sent his club through a typical Monday workout, complete with a scrimmage
for the younger players.
"It was a normal Monday for us," Croom said. "We didn't get a whole lot
done with the older guys, but we needed the new guys to get some more work.
We'll scrimmage our younger players every Monday during the season."
Most of the first and second units worked for just 75 minutes Monday, an
in-season practice day that begins an hour later than usual following class
labs. That group worked on blitz technique on both sides of the ball and
finished the drill with a light conditioning session. The same cannot be
said for the younger players, some of whom are still trying to make the
weekend travel roster.
"I'd rather find out a few things about them now, see who can help us
against South Carolina," Croom said. "They've just got get a little more
live work."
One of those players who could benefit from the extra full-speed scrimmaging
and is riding the cusp of the dress-out squad is true freshman halfback
Arnil Stallworth.
"He's up and down, one day he's good, one day he's not so good," Croom said
of the Daphne, Ala., native. "He's a lot like Wall Street. I just don't
know whether to buy or sell. I'm not sure that I want to use up this year
because he is going to be a good player for us. But we have to find out who
is going to help us."
The scrimmage lasted another 30 minutes and the full squad was off the field
before 7 p.m.
