OFFENSIVE TACKLES CONTINUE TO DRAW CROOM'S EYE
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State head football coach Sylvester Croom
said his club "got better" during Tuesday's practice, another drill divided
between the outdoor practice fields behind the Holliman Athletic Center and
the indoor Palmeiro Center.
"We worked basically all over the field on first down and third down
situations," Croom said. "We also did a lot of work on red zone offense
and defense. I thought we continued to make improvement. I just hope that
feeling bears out when I see the tape."
Croom indicated that his team is still working with a full playbook and that
there were still too many mental mistakes for his liking. "But we'll narrow
the playbook later this week and get it down to a workable plan for South
Carolina."
One area that particularly drew the head coach's attention was offensive
tackle, a position that has remained in a fluid state since early last week.
"Cal (Calvin Wilson) and Craig (Jenkins) are starting to come on, they are
making progress," Croom said. "Then J.D. (Hamilton) slipped back a little
during the last scrimmage and it has made for some good competition at
offensive tackle.
"The bottom line is that they'll make that decision (who starts)
themselves," he added. "And it may go until Tuesday or Wednesday next
week. But all four will play against South Carolina. I feel a lot better
about that position now than I did a week ago."
