CARLSON WINS FIELD GOAL JOB; TRAVEL ROSTER NEARLY FULL
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State head football coach Sylvester Croom
announced that sophomore place-kicker Adam Carlson (Gulfport, Miss.) has won
the regular field goal and extra-point kicking job following Thursday's
final practice of pre-season camp.
"Adam will handle both the short and long field goals," Croom said. "Keith
(Andrews) will kick off."
Carlson played in four games for the Bulldogs during his redshirt freshman
season, taking over the regular kicking job from Andrews for the final three
games of the 2005 season. Andrews was sidelined during the Houston game in
Week 7 with a severe groin injury.
Carlson converted two-of-four field goal attempts during those four games to
close the '05 campaign and made all seven of his extra-point tries. Andrews
had made five-of-eight three-pointers until being shelved by injury.
But the place-kicker job was the only position battle still up for grabs
that the head coach noted had been decided. Reserves at several positions
on both sides of the ball and the make-up of the starting offensive line
will be decided during game week, Croom indicated.
"I have a tentative idea of our 80," Croom said of his dress-out squad for
South Carolina. "We still have a couple of guys battling for spots, and it
will be next week before a decision is made.
"We have three starters on the offensive line for sure," Croom continued.
"(Brian) Anderson, (Anthony) Strauder, and (Royce) Blackledge will
definitely start. We'll have to see how the other two shake out. But we'll
be in good shape on the offensive line, I feel a whole lot better about them
than I did a week ago. They've worked hard."
One the back-up jobs still to be determined is halfback, where several
players are hoping to spell starter Brandon Thornton (Birmingham, Ala.).
Among the hopefuls is Christian Ducre, who is still awaiting clearance from
the NCAA on his transfer from Tulane.
