MSU ATHLETES SCORE HIGH; BULLDOGS ENTER GAME WEEK
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's male and female student-athletes
combined to record a 2.93 grade point average during the past spring
semester, the second-highest semester GPA recorded since composite grades
have been tracked by the MSU Athletic Academic Office.
MSU's women athletes posted a second consecutive semester record high by
turning in an overall 3.27 grade point average. State's men's sports
registered a 2.68 GPA.
Golf and tennis recorded the highest female team sport grade point with a
3.60, while golf also recorded the highest GPA on the men's side, a 3.27
mark.
Of the 269 scholarship student-athletes at MSU, 78 made either Dean's
Scholar or President's Scholar list, and 146 of that total (54 percent),
earned a 3.00 grade point average or higher.
On the practice field, the calendar may have said Saturday, but the
Bulldogs' practice schedule read Monday, since the team opens its season
Thursday night against South Carolina at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field
on the MSU campus.
So, following script, head coach Sylvester Croom sent his charges through a
normal Monday workout, light for the players who are expected to perform
Thursday night, but a 20-minute scrimmage for the younger players still
anxious to find room on the State depth chart.
"I thought (Arnil) Stallworth looked good again," Croom said. "We've got a
difficult decision to make on him. Heck, we'll probably go ahead and play
him. He's a player and he's in the mix at halfback."
