MT's Smith Named Player of the Week
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Senior Colby Smith was named the Sun Belt Conference
Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for his performance in Thursday's
season-opening win over Florida International. It marks the second player of
the week honor for Smith during his career and the eighth special team's
award for the Blue Raiders since they entered the league in 2001.
Smith enjoyed one of the best punting nights in Blue Raider history on
Thursday, while also providing the extra point that proved to be the
difference in Middle Tennessee's 7-6 win. Smith averaged an impressive 43.4
yards on his nine punt attempts with four of his punts being placed inside
the 20, constantly giving Florida International poor field position.
Smith's biggest effort proved to be the play of the game. Punting from deep
in his own endzone on a fourth-and-7 play from the 5-yard line, Smith boomed
a 79-yard punt to turn the field position battle back in the favor of the
Blue Raiders. Smith's punt went down as the second longest in school history
and equaled the Sun Belt Conference record.
Smith and the Blue Raiders will now concentrate on game number two against
the ACC's Maryland Terrapins in College Park this Saturday. Kickoff is
scheduled for 5:05 PM CST.
