Stockstill gets extension

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Director of Athletics Chris Massaro announced today a one-year contract extension for Head Football Coach Rick Stockstill. The first-year coach now has the maximum five years remaining on his current contract.

“I really appreciate Dr. (Sidney) McPhee and Chris (Massaro) having confidence that we are building this program the right way and believing in what we are doing,” said Stockstill. “This shows recruits there is stability in this program and they can finish their careers with this staff.

“Head coaches do not get extensions without surrounding themselves with quality people and coaches, and that is what we have here at Middle Tennessee.”

In his first year at the helm of the Blue Raiders, Stockstill guided the program to a Sun Belt Conference championship and a spot in the Motor City Bowl on December 26 against Central Michigan. It marks the first postseason appearance for the Blue Raiders at the I-A level.

“His impact is evident on Middle Tennessee football and the entire University,” added Massaro. “Not only did he excel on the field as league champions and as conference coach of the year, but he has organized his department to lay the foundation for even greater success.”

During the 2006 championship run, Stockstill and his staff developed an All-American, 11 all-conference players, 11 SBC Players of the Week, a consensus National Defensive Player of the Week, and the school’s all-time sack leader. Off the field, Stockstill made an immediate impact as well by dramatically improving the team’s APR to 949.

“Under Coach Stockstill’s leadership the football program enjoyed the type of season that generated a lot of positive talk about Middle Tennessee State University,” said Dr. Sidney McPhee. “Much of it can be credited to Coach Stockstill and his staff for the job they did in taking our football program to the first bowl game in the I-A era. A successful season like this year’s is invaluable to our entire University and overall goals. We look forward to working with Coach Stockstill for years to come and are excited about the future of our University.”
