Indianapolis head coach Tony Dungy (Minnesota) and Chicago mentor Lovie Smith (Tulsa) have become the first two African- American NFL head coaches to take their teams to the Super Bowl. Former NFF Draddy Award winner Peyton Manning (Tennessee) will lead the Colts against the Bears on Feb. 4 in Miami. Both starting quarterbacks played in the SEC, Manning with the Vols and Rex Grossman with Florida.
Hawaii's Colt Brennan withdrew from the NFL Draft and will return to school for his senior season... UCF and N.C. State have inked a home-and-home contract for the 2007 and ’08 seasons... The NCAA’s new branding campaign has begun for Division II football. For more information on the “I Choose Division II” promotion, please go to www.ncaasports. com... Florida State and Clemson will face off on Labor Day night 2007 on national television, a slot typically held by FSU and Miami (Fla.)... In Southwest Airlines Spirit magazine, Bill Boggs named Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Indiana and Ohio State as some of the best competitive collegiate cheerleading programs in the country.
Former Texas State head coach David Bailiff has been selected as head coach at Rice... Rod Broadway is the new head coach at Grambling State... Tim Brewster was chosen as Minnesota’s head coach... Former N.C. State mentor Chuck Amato will return to Florida State as executive head coach and linebacker coach... Ron Powlus has become QB coach at Notre Dame where he starred at the same position... Former Maryland secondary coach Tim Banks has become defensive coordinator at Central Michigan... Former Vanderbilt QB and UTEP head coach David Lee is leaving the Dallas Cowboys to return to Arkansas as offensive coordinator... Steve Brown has become defensive coordinator at Kentucky... Former Iowa State assistant head coach Tony Alford has been hired as running backs coach at Louisville... Miami (Fla.) has signed former Auburn QB Patrick Nix as offensive coordinator... Bobby Bentley was named head coach at Presbyterian College (S.C.)... Ken Chin was named vice president for events by the Atlanta Sports Council.
Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster has been named as the 11th winner of the Frank Broyles Award for Division I assistant coach of the year... Amy Wischnia, director of operations for the Rose Bowl Game, and Mitch Dorger, CEO of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, accepted awards for Best Collegiate Single-Sport Event and Best Sports Event of the Year on behalf of the 2006 Rose Bowl at the 2006 SportsTravel Awards.
Baylor’s Board of Trustees has approved a $22 million on-campus practice facility with total private funding... Gameday Management Group was given the spectator shuttle operations contract for the new University of Phoenix Stadium, home of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game.
Shabazz Kelton, a leader and key player in the renaissance of the New Brunswick (N.J.) High School football program, has been selected from more than 12,000 participants nationwide as the December Student-Athlete of the Month for Play It Smart, the NFF’s highly successful mentoring program targeted at student-athletes in underserved communities.
The NFF also announced that award winning film director Jeff Cooney has agreed to continue his support of Mount Vernon (N.Y.) High School’s participation in Play It Smart. This will mark the fifth year that Cooney will provide full funding of $25,000 to maintain the program at Mount Vernon.
USF’s Keeley Dorsey died suddenly in Tampa after an off-season workout on Jan. 17. In his memory, the Bulls cancelled their annual awards banquet, which was scheduled for Jan. 20.
