Farley On-Campus Salute Slated for This Weekend
An On-Campus Salute for 2006 Divisional Hall of Famer Dick Farley will take place this Saturday, Sept. 30, during the Williams-Trinity game in Williamstown, Mass. Coach Farley, considered one of the greatest Division III coaches of all time, coached at Williams College from 1987-2003. Farley amassed a .849 winning percentage, which currently ranks him sixth among coaches in all divisions in college football history.

Rutgers is ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time in 30 years (1976 season) this week… USC won a record 24th consecutive Pac-10 Conference game… BYU experienced a “white out” on Saturday, as the capacity crowd in Provo wore white shirts for the game against Utah State… The Big Ten Conference announced that it will wait until the conclusion of the Major League Baseball regular season on Oct. 1 to determine if it is necessary to move the Oct. 7 Penn State at Minnesota game to Saturday, Nov. 25… Florida will wear throwback uniforms this Saturday versus Alabama as part of UF’s 100 Years of Florida Football celebration… With Navy’s loss in overtime to Tulsa, North Texas is the only Division I-A school to never play a game in overtime… Tulane will play its first home game since Dec. 4, 2004, this weekend against SMU… New Hampshire WR David Ball caught his 50th touchdown pass on Saturday, tying 2006 Divisional Hall of Famer Jerry Rice’s all-time Division I-AA mark… Clemson honored their 1981 National Championship team during halftime ceremonies last Saturday… Kansas won their 9th straight home game… Michigan State wore throwback helmets versus Notre Dame last weekend. Both teams wore patches commemorating the 40th anniversary of the “Game of the Century” tie between the two schools… North Dakota State became the sixth I-AA school to knock off a I-A opponent this year, upsetting Ball State… Arkansas’ win over Alabama was their sixth victory in overtime games in seven tries… Georgia Tech’s Sept. 22 game versus Virginia was dubbed “Throwback Thursday.” The theme was 1970: Georgia Tech players wore throwback uniforms, the popcorn sold for $1 and period music played over the loudspeakers.
The Buoniconti Fund, the fundraising arm of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, held its annual Great Sports Legends Dinner. The 21st annual event was held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City, home of the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner. Among this year's honorees were 2006 Hall of Fame inductee and Florida Gators star Emmitt Smith, former Miami Hurricane Michael Irvin and 1993 Gold Medal recipient Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf. The Citadel will retire Marc Buoniconti's No. 59 during halftime ceremonies Saturday as the Bulldogs host Chattanooga.
The American Football Coaches Association has announced its 2006 “Good Works Team” to salute football student-athletes who contribute on and off the field in special ways. The Southeastern Conference led all Division I-A leagues with four selections, while St. John’s (Minn.), coached by 2006 Divisional Hall of Fame inductee John Gagliardi, had representation for a record ninth consecutive year.
Wake Forest and Vanderbilt have agreed to a seven-game series beginning in 2007… Grand View in Des Moines, Iowa, will field an NAIA football program starting in 2008… Duke is one of 15 institutions using the Pro Simulator, an elaborate video game that aids in expediting the gridiron learning process… Penn State fans are using the "Beaver Stadium Lot Line,” a new phone line to report incidents that require either police or parking attendant assistance before, during and after home games… Kansas State has launched a program for greater student involvement in daily and weekly KSU football activities, titled Powercat Pride… Charlotte49erfootball.com is leading an effort to start a football program at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte… Raycom Sports and Lincoln Financial Sports have partnered with the Atlantic Coast Conference to create a new subscription-based broadband network called ACC Select… TicketsNow signed an agreement with the University of Cincinnati to be its official and exclusive online secondary ticket marketplace… AthletiShare signed an agreement with Ohio State to provide the school with its DigitalAthlete recruiting service.
Florida Atlantic head coach Howard Schnellenberger threw out the first pitch before a recent Florida Marlins-New York Mets game… Former Rice defensive back Bucky Allshouse and his wife Cynthia were honored with the Distinguished Owl Award at the school's biennial "An Evening for Rice's Honour" fundraising gala… The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum featured College Hall of Fame member and BYU All-America QB Steve Young in Dallas on Sept. 20… 1981 College Hall of Famer Roger Staubach has been selected fore the 2006 Patriot’s Award by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society for his continuous support and commitment to America and its veterans… Former Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky head coach Bill Curry has been named as the 2007 recipient of the AFCA's Amos Alonzo Stagg Award… Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner is the honorary chair for the 2006 Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Indiana "50 Men in 50 Days" campaign, as the group has a goal of recruiting 50 new male volunteers to become Big Brothers… Former Mississippi State All-American and former NFF Chapter Leadership Award winner Joe Fortunato will be an honorary captain for the Bulldogs’ Oct. 7 home game with West Virginia.
A 1992 Western Washington play will be among the "Top 50 Most Spectacular Football Plays" to be aired on the FSN “Best Damn Sports Show Period” Tuesday, Sept. 26… Marshall, in conjunction with CSTV and ISP Sports, agreed to a deal with West Virginia Media Holdings to televise four of Marshall's five remaining road games, starting with last week's game at Tennessee… Host Communications purchased the Pinnacle Sports Network, which broadcasts Nebraska games and coaches’ shows… WAC.tv, the internet-based distribution system of the Western Athletic Conference will air 34 games this season…
McNeese State's 1976 Independence Bowl team will gather for a reunion Oct. 7 as the Cowboys host Southern Utah State… Clemson cornerback Ray Ray McElrathbey, a graduate of the NFF’s Play It Smart program at Benjamin Mays High School in Georgia, is the first nominee for the FedEx Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award… The Gator Bowl Association announced that W.W. Gay Mechanical Contractor, Inc., will be the local presenting sponsor of the 62nd annual Toyota Gator Bowl… Florida Citrus Sports’ annual Feast on the 50 membership event will take place Sept. 28… ACC Commissioner John Swofford addressed the trustees of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce last Wednesday, promoting the ACC's championship game... The Collegiate Licensing Company has renewed its exclusive licensing agreement with the Tournament of Roses and will be the official licensing agent for Florida Citrus Sports.
On Sept. 15, Roosevelt (N.Y.) High School defeated Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.) High School 7-0. The game was made possible because of donations by the residents of Cold Spring Harbor district to help restore the athletics program at Roosevelt, which had suffered budget cuts.
USC will add 600 student seats to its current student allotment of 8,000, for its home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The school is also considering adding a standing room only section, which could accommodate an additional 400 students… Wake Forest is nearing a sell-out of all premium seats for its future renovation of Groves Stadium.
James Wilson, Jr., a nationally respected real estate developer and an NFF board member since 1997, died Sept. 21 at 71… 2000 College Football Hall of Fame coach Frank “Muddy” Waters died Sept. 20 from heart failure. He was 83… Retired Baylor player and coach Charles Driver passed away at 76.
