2006-07 Bowl Notes
TCU held Football Bowl Subdivision rushing leader Garrett Wolfe of Northern Illinois to 28 net yards rushing in a 37-7 San Diego County Poinsettia Bowl victory to open the 32-game bowl season. TCU has won eight in a row to finish the season and has had 11-win seasons three of the last four years. Northern Illinois alum and current San Diego Charger Michael Turner will be sporting a TCU LaDanian Tomlinson jersey after losing a friendly wager to his teammate and ex-Horned Frog following the game... Capping an 11-2 season with a 10-game winning streak and their first bowl victory since 1996, the BYU Cougars downed Oregon 38-8 in the Pioneer Pure Vision Las Vegas Bowl. A Las Vegas Bowl and Sam Boyd Stadium record crowd of 44, 615 watched BYU's win... Omar Haugabook threw four touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Troy to its first-ever bowl victory, defeating Rice 41-17 in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl... South Florida also got its first-ever bowl win with a 24- 7 victory over East Carolina in the inaugural Papajohns.com Bowl... In their first bowl game in 16 years, San Jose State beat New Mexico 20-12 in the New Mexico Bowl. SJSU’s win marks the Spartans’ first-ever bowl win outside the state of California... Utah matched the longest active streak of bowl game wins (6), holding off Tulsa 25-13 in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Fort Worth Bowl. The bowl joined the America Supports You team, a Department of Defense initiative that recognizes the support of Americans for members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. A full color “America Supports You” logo adorned Amon Carter Stadium, and several scoreboard “shout outs” from American troops were flashed on the stadium message board throughout the evening. Former Tulsa WR and Dallas Cowboy great Drew Pearson and current Cowboy and former Washington State QB Drew Bledsoe were seen on the sidelines supporting the Golden Hurricane... Hawaii QB Colt Brennan passed for 559 yards en route to breaking the NCAA single season record for touchdown passes (55) as the Warriors downed Arizona State 41-24 in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Sunday night. Brennan, who finished the season with 58 touchdown passes, becomes only the third player in college football history to pass for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a single season.
