Joe Newton on Mackey Award List

Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State University senior tight end Joe Newton has been selected as one of 30 individuals on the John Mackey Award Watch List, the Nassau County Sports Commission announced Tuesday. The award signifies the nation's premier tight end.

The 6-7 256-pound native of Roseburg, Ore., was on the Mackey Award list last season before suffering a season ending injury prior to the first practice in August. Newton enters the 2006 season with 69 career receptions for 842 yards and eight touchdowns. He was a Pac-10 Honorable Mention selection in 2004 and named the ESPN Capital One Player of the Game after OSU's victory over Notre Dame in the Insight Bowl.

The 2006 co-team captain is one of six players from the Pac-10 Conference to be recognized.

Oregon State begins preparation Aug. 4 for the 2006 season opener against Eastern Washington Thurs., Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. at Reser Stadium.
