Pitt to Honor '76 Championship
Team
PITTSBURGH-Thirty years
ago this fall, the University of Pittsburgh achieved
one of the most remarkable seasons in college
football history.
The Panthers, four seasons removed from a 1-10
record, stormed to the 1976 national championship
with a 12-0 mark, including a 27-3 vanquishing
of Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Led by Coach John
Majors and Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett,
the '76 squad earned status as one of the greatest
teams of all time.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of that monumental
season, the University of Pittsburgh will honor
its 1976 national title team during halftime of
the Panthers' season-opening contest with Virginia
on Sept. 2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Members of the '76 squad will appear at Panthers
FanFest on Art Rooney Avenue for autographs from
3 to 4 p.m. They will also take part in Pitt's
"March to Victory" at 6 p.m., on General Robinson
Street.
Current Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt was a graduate
assistant coach for that team and says the achievements
of three decades ago still resonate today.
"We display our national championship trophies
proudly and prominently at Pitt," Wannstedt said.
"This football program was built on the highest
of standards and that's what drives our players
and coaches every time we step onto the field.
"I am fortunate to own my fair share of championship
rings from both college and pro football. The
only championship ring I wear these days is from
the 1976 season. Our players and prospects should
know that I was part of the greatest team Pitt
ever had. I take pride in that."
In addition to Dorsett, the other All-America
standouts on that team were quarterback Matt Cavanaugh
(now Pitt's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks
coach), middle guard Al Romano, defensive tackle
Randy Holloway, safety Bob Jury, center Tom Brzoza
and split end Gordon Jones.
"Welcoming back our historic 1976 team will be
a tremendous way to kick off the new year," Pitt
athletic director Jeff Long said. "Our fans will
be able to enjoy the excitement of the new season
while also helping to pay tribute to the greats
of Pitt's past. Our game against Virginia promises
to be a special night and we are looking forward
to a great crowd under the lights at Heinz Field."
Pitt will play a 12-game regular season, including
seven home contests at Heinz Field this year.
In addition to Virginia, the Panthers' home foes
include West Virginia, Louisville, Michigan State,
Rutgers, Toledo and The Citadel. For season ticket
