2-15-06 - Bill Legg Named Offensive Coordinator
Purdue head football coach Joe Tiller today announced that offensive
line coach Bill Legg will assume the role of offensive coordinator. Legg
replaces Jim Chaney, who was hired as assistant offensive line coach of
the St. Louis Rams on Monday, and will continue to coach the line.
Legg has been with the Boilermakers for three years. He has been
instrumental in the growth of youngsters Jordan Grimes, Sean Sester,
Robbie Powell and Garret Miller and the continued development of Mike
Otto. Last season, Grimes was named second team All-Big Ten, while Otto,
Sester and graduated center Matt Turner received honorable mention
recognition. The line allowed a Tiller era-low nine sacks out of 428
passing attempts, an average of one every 47.6 attempts.
Two of Legg's pupils have gone on to the National Football
League - center Nick Hardwick with the San Diego Chargers and tackle
Kelly Butler with the Detroit Lions.
"I am excited about this opportunity and appreciative of the
confidence that Coach Tiller is showing me by giving me the
opportunity," Legg said. "I look forward to continuing the success that
Purdue has experienced on the offensive side of the ball the last nine
years."
Since Tiller became head coach in 1997, the Boilermakers have
ranked in the top 20 nationally in total offense on six occasions. They
have been in the top 10 four times.
"Bill is an accomplished coach who has been a coordinator in the
past and understands the responsibilities that go along with that
position," Tiller said. "He has experience and is very capable. We have
every confidence that he will have a positive impact in his expanded
role."
Legg previously served as offensive coordinator at West Virginia
in 2000 and at West Virginia Tech in 1988.
Legg came to the Boilermakers from Marshall, where he served as
tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2001 and 2002
seasons. The Thundering Herd ranked third in the nation in total offense
both years, averaging 505 and 495 yards per game, while compiling a 21-4
record and winning two bowl games. In 2001, Legg coached Gregg Kellett,
who earned first team All-Mid-American Conference honors and signed a
free-agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Legg worked on the same
staff as Purdue defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo.
From 1995 to 2000, Legg worked at his alma mater, West Virginia,
as interior offensive line coach. The Mountaineers were 39-31 and played
in four bowl games in his six years on the staff.
Legg's other experience includes one season as offensive line
coach at Virginia Military Institute (1994) and five seasons as
offensive line coach at Eastern Illinois (1989-93). He was a graduate
assistant at West Virginia in 1986 and 1987, working with the tight ends
and special teams. Legg and Purdue defensive coordinator Brock Spack
were on the same staff at Eastern Illinois in 1989 and 1990.
A four-year starting center for West Virginia from 1981 to 1984,
Legg was head coach Don Nehlen's first recruit with the Mountaineers. He
played in four bowl games, and as a senior received the Ira E. Rodgers
Award for being the player who has "shown high leadership and academic
qualities as well as football performance." Legg was drafted by the
Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League and
subsequently had a brief stint with the Washington Redskins in 1985.
Legg (born April 9, 1962) is a native of Poca, W.Va. He earned a
bachelor's degree in psychology in 1985 and a master's in education in
1987, both from West Virginia. He and his wife, Kelly, have a daughter,
Sarah.
