Painter named to Manning Award watch list
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter
has been named to the 2006 Manning Award watch list.
The 6-foot-4, 228-pound Painter, from Vincennes, Ind., is one of 22
signal-callers on the list. Four other Big Ten quarterbacks are
included: Chad Henne of Michigan, Troy Smith of Ohio State, Drew Stanton
of Michigan State and Drew Tate of Iowa.
Last season, Painter appeared in nine games, starting the last five. He
completed 89 of 170 passes (52.4 percent) for 932 yards with three
touchdowns and five interceptions, while rushing for 251 yards on 52
carries (4.8 average) and four touchdowns. Painter was named an
honorable mention Freshman All-American and to the Big Ten All-Freshman
team by The Sporting News.
The Manning Award, which is maintained by the Sugar Bowl, was created in
honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli
Manning and is presented following the holiday bowl season. It is the
only quarterback award which takes into consideration the candidates'
bowl performances.
The winner will be determined by a select panel of national media
covering college football, as well as each of the Mannings.
The 2005 winning was Texas' Vince Young, who now is a rookie with the
Tennessee Titans.
